While the first track is more straight gospel choir, the second adds a reggae rhythm into the mix, creating one of the happiest overall sounds on the album.ДЄnother thing to note about the album is its many, sometimes blink-and-youвЂ™ll-miss-them collaborations: as well as the more obviously recognisable contributions from artists like De La Soul, MF Doom and Shaun Ryder that were mentioned earlier, you have Neneh Cherry performing vocals on вЂKids With GunsвЂ™ and the late Ike Turner playing piano on вЂEvery Planet We Reach Is DeadвЂ™. The closing two tracks вЂDonвЂ™t Get Lost in HeavenвЂ™ and вЂDemon DaysвЂ™ segue into each other and leave the album on a more ethereal, lighter note, all the while keeping its themes intact: вЂWhen lies become reality you numb yourself with drugs and TV, pick yourself up itвЂ™s a brand new day, so turn yourself вЂ™roundвЂ¦вЂ™. This is probably the most powerful moment on the album and itвЂ™s still as fantastic now as it was a decade ago. The spoken lyrics, read by the late Dennis Hopper, no less, tell the story of a civilisation who are invaded by вЂStrangefolkвЂ™ who begin to mine a nearby mountain for jewels вЂ“ the mountain, once empty, explodes with fire and obliterates the civilisation that lives in its shadow.

There is absolutely no doubt at this point that Albarn knows exactly how to write a catchy, danceable, pop track.ДЄs the album begins to come to a close, we have the incredibly dark but compelling вЂFire Coming Out of the MonkeyвЂ™s HeadвЂ™, which is a definite metaphor for oil drilling. The trackвЂ™s title and main hook originated from ShaunвЂ™s pronunciation of the trackвЂ™s original title вЂItвЂ™s ThereвЂ™. Still, the album picks right back up again with вЂDAREвЂ™, perhaps the poppiest track on the album, featuring a rather bizarre vocal from Happy MondaysвЂ™ Shaun Ryder. ItвЂ™s not a bad track by any means, but I feel that though it has a lot of potential, it never really quite reaches where it means to go. The next track on the album, вЂWhite LightвЂ™ is perhaps in my opinion the albumвЂ™s only mis-step. The album soldiers on through the two more heavily rap-based tracks вЂNovember Has ComeвЂ™ and вЂAll AloneвЂ™, featuring MF Doom and Roots Manuva respectively: both powerful tracks with beats you canвЂ™t help but nod your head to, as well as some great choruses from Damon Albarn that cut through the rap. We then reach a personal favourite track вЂEvery Planet We Reach Is DeadвЂ™, which reaches a climax that is an absolute cacophony of sound. вЂI saw that day, lost my mind, Lord IвЂ™m fine, maybe in time youвЂ™ll want to be mineвЂ™. вЂEl MananaвЂ™ then brings the album into darker territory and is one of the most sombre tracks Gorillaz have released. ItвЂ™s got simple, catchy hooks that stick very readily in your mind and a great segment from hip-hop kings De La Soul. вЂFeel Good Inc.вЂ™ is perhaps the most famous Gorillaz song and thereвЂ™s a good reason it became so huge вЂ“ itвЂ™s excellent. While catchy, this is a song with some real lyrical weight to it. This is also the first rap segment we have on the album, this one given to us by Bootie Brown, with references to politics of the time, a time of the war in Iraq. вЂDirty HarryвЂ™ has a wonderful juxtaposition of a childrenвЂ™s choir singing lyrics about the necessity of carrying a gun вЂ“ this is perhaps a social commentary from Damon Albarn and itвЂ™s a rather fantastic one. The album then continues with a string of three singles: вЂDirty HarryвЂ™, вЂFeel Good Inc.вЂ™ and вЂEl MananaвЂ™.

These lyrics, though simple, are very resonant, especially considering that this album was written at a time where the full extent of climate change was becoming clearer. вЂO Green WorldвЂ™ is the first track that really starts to drive home the themes of environmental and societal destruction that the album has: вЂO green world, donвЂ™t desert me now, bring me back to fallen town where someone is still aliveвЂ™. From these tracks, you can already tell that GorillazвЂ™s sound has become more expanded and refined since their first album: вЂDemon DaysвЂ™ has instrumental layers that take many repeat listens to fully appreciate. When the time came for a successor to the album, we were given вЂDemon DaysвЂ™, which was released 10 years ago this year.ДЇrom the get-go, вЂDemon DaysвЂ™ sets the tone for the album with вЂIntroвЂ™, вЂLast Living SoulsвЂ™ and вЂKids with GunsвЂ™. The album was incredibly successful, blending hip-hop and rock, along with a slew of other influences, in a very original way. Gorillaz are a вЂvirtual bandвЂ™ created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett, whose debut album, featuring hit singles like вЂ19/2000вЂ™ and вЂClint EastwoodвЂ™ was released back in 2001.
